Crafting Solutions: Turning Plastic Bags into Sleeping Mats for the Homeless

Plastic bags pose a serious threat to the environment, often ending up as deadly waste in landfills and oceans. To combat this issue, many are turning to a method called “plarn,” short for plastic yarn. This involves cutting plastic grocery bags into strips and weaving them into sleeping mats for the homeless.
In Sardis, Mississippi, a group of around 15 women gathers weekly to collect plastic bags and transform them into plarn. With their expertise in stitching, they efficiently craft these mats, providing a solution for both plastic pollution and homelessness. Each mat takes approximately 50 hours to create and offers a hygienic alternative for those in need, free from concerns of bed bugs or lice.
