Ukrainian leaders in Syracuse pray for peace on the 3rd anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — Local leaders with Ukrainian ties in Syracuse hope to see an end to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.

“A deal does need to be made, the war needs to stop, lives need to be saved, and the people that are still alive and still waging need to be…everything just needs to stop,” Nykola Lucak, president of the Ukrainian National Home in Syracuse, said. “Ukraine shouldn’t…and I don’t think they’re going to give up any of the land.”

Since the invasion, many families have sought help from Saint Luke’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church after feeling Europe to escape the violence.

“We especially felt the pain that the people have been suffering,” Father Mykola Andryshkiv said.

Father Andryshkiv said the pain continues to be felt by Ukrainian-Americans as the war rages on.

“We are deeply worried about the ongoing events that are going on in Ukraine right now,” he said. “We have been praying, we have been helping…financially, materialistically…and the message we’re trying to send to them is they should stay in prayer and stay strong in spirit.”
