The thaw takes a pause Thursday
We finally escaped Old Man Winter’s icy grip, at least for today. The temperature climbed above freezing by noon Wednesday after over 4 days below the freezing mark. The time above freezing was short and we’re looking at another shot of frigid air before the warming trend resumes.

Arctic air was blown out of the area thanks to southwest winds Wednesday, but an arctic front is set to sweep through by Thursday morning. It will deliver clouds, maybe even a few flurries, along with below-freezing highs across much of the Ozarks.
We resume our warm-up schedule on Friday after a bitterly cold start to the day. Friday looks bright with above-freezing highs. Saturday will start relatively sunny, but clouds will be on the increase ahead of the next cold front. Saturday will be our warmest day of the weekend and our warmest day since the middle of the month. Clouds and colder temperatures can be expected Sunday.
The overall pattern across the nation and continent will be undergoing important changes as we end the month and head into February. Cold air has been bottled up over Canada and the Lower 48 thanks to a blocking ridge over Greenland. That roadblock will finally be removed as we end the month. This will allow cold air to flow less impeded into the Atlantic with warmer Pacific air moving in from the west. This should mark a shift to a warmer mode of winter weather as we push toward February. Back to work weather next week looks quiet and warmer with highs possibly closing in on 60° by Wednesday.
