Suspended South Korean president Yoon to be charged

South Korea’s Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) has recommended that suspended president Yoon Suk Yeol be indicted on charges of insurrection and abuse of power, news agency Yonhap reported on Thursday.

The CIO, which does not have the authority to indict a president, said it had transferred its investigation records to prosecutors, Yonhap reported.

Yoon has defended his decision to declare martial law, a short-lived decree that he announced in a shock address to the nation on the evening of December 3. To many, the move appeared to be an attempt to crack down on his political opponents.

In extraordinary scenes a week ago, police officers and staff from the anti-corruption office escorted Yoon, 64, from his residence after their second attempt at entering the premises.

Impeachment proceedings are also under way against the suspended president at the Constitutional Court.
