A man has been seriously injured in an attack at the Berlin Holocaust memorial.

Police said he was attacked by “an unknown person” at about 6pm local time – with local media reporting it was a stabbing.

“The injured man was taken to hospital. Rescue workers are on site caring for several people who had to witness the events. Investigations are ongoing at the crime scene,” police said on X.

The suspect is still at large and officers said the motive was so far unclear and they can’t yet confirm what weapon was used.

The memorial, which opened in 2005, is a cluster of more than 2,700 grey concrete slabs of varying heights and is a well-known site in the German capital.

Police have cordoned off the memorial, located close to the Brandenburg Gate, while searches take place.
