Italian government aims to return to nuclear energy

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government plans to further its return to nuclear energy by establishing a legal framework by the end of 2027, Italian media reported on Thursday.

“Italy is ready to return to nuclear energy. This is an important decision that will not replace renewable energies, but rather complement them in order to ensure a balanced and sustainable energy mix,” Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin told Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore.

An initial draft for a framework law is expected to be presented to the cabinet shortly, he said during the interview.

Italy ceased its nuclear energy operations following the Chernobyl disaster, with the last nuclear power plants shut down after a 1990 referendum.

Although some weighed a return to nuclear power, plans were abandoned after the Fukushima disaster in 2011.

Since taking office at the end of 2022, Meloni’s government has consistently announced its intention to return to nuclear power, particularly focusing on small modular reactors and fusion reactors. However, specific details remain undisclosed.

Opposition parties and environmentalists have criticized these plans.
