India’s Modi repeats offer to mediate between Ukraine and Russia
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again offered to mediate between Russia and Ukraine in an attempt to end the war, over two and a half years after Russia invaded its smaller neighbour.
“We fully support the early establishment of peace and stability,” Modi said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the city of Kazan on Tuesday.
Putin had previously welcomed him with a hug and praised the good bilateral relations between the two countries. Modi is one of more than 20 heads of state and government who have travelled to Russia for the BRICS summit of emerging market nations.
Problems should be solved in a peaceful way, Modi said. India is in contact with all sides and is prepared to continue to “provide every kind of support” to end the war.
Modi last visited Russia in July. His embrace of Putin then was seen as a provocation in Ukraine, where a Russian missile attack had destroyed a children’s hospital in Kiev. Modi later also embraced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy during a visit to Kiev.
