Hamas to hand over remains of four hostages to Israel

The militant Palestinian group Hamas plans to hand over on Thursday the mortal remains of four people abducted from Israel to the Gaza Strip in 2023.
Israel plans to verify their identities afterwards. It would be the first time that the bodies of Israeli victims have been handed over since the beginning of the Gaza war after the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023.
The Israeli army has already recovered several hostage bodies in the Gaza Strip itself and brought them back to Israel, however.
According to Hamas, the dead include a mother and two toddlers. All three also have German citizenship.
The bodies are believed to be that of Schiri, Ariel and Kfir Bibas.
In November 2023, Hamas announced that the three had been killed in Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip. However, from an Israeli perspective, there is still no conclusive confirmation of their deaths.
It could take a while before there is certainty as to whether the three bodies are actually those of the family.
Citing Health Minister Uriel Busso, Israeli media reported that the identification process could take some time. The cause of death is also to be examined.
No information was initially available as to who the fourth dead person is. According to Hamas and Israeli media reports, it is an elderly man.
In return for the four bodies, Israel will reportedly release all women and minors detained since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023 who are not believed to have been involved in the armed struggle against Israel.
